Water can travel along a pipe or the heater’s outer jacket before reaching the floor. Where the puddle sits may not be where the leak starts. The safest useful information is what you can see without opening equipment or touching hot, wet, or electrical components.

Where the water may be coming from

Visible clueWhat a plumber may check
Moisture near the topSupply connections and surrounding plumbing
Water near a valve or discharge pipeThe valve, operating conditions, pressure, and thermal expansion
Water around the baseThe tank, drainage components, water tracking from above, or another nearby source
Intermittent moistureWhen it occurs, operating conditions, and whether condensation or another source is involved

These are inspection clues, not diagnoses. A. O. Smith’s leak guidance notes that fittings and valves can leak separately from the tank. A confirmed internal tank leak generally calls for replacement.

What to do while arranging service

  • Keep children and pets away from the heater and the wet area.
  • Stop using hot water and follow the manufacturer’s emergency instructions only when controls are safely accessible.
  • If you cannot safely identify or reach a shutoff, keep away and tell the service company.
  • Take photos from a safe, dry position. Note whether the leak is steady or occasional.
  • Do not drain the heater, remove access covers, or attempt a valve repair while waiting.

If you suspect a gas leak, leave immediately. Avoid switches and flames; contact the gas utility from outside the affected area. Call 911 for immediate danger. Follow SoCalGas safety instructions.

Why a dripping relief valve needs diagnosis

The temperature-and-pressure relief valve is a safety device. Discharge can involve the valve itself or a condition elsewhere in the system. Replacing it without checking the cause may leave the underlying problem in place. Never cap, plug, or redirect the outlet in a way that prevents safe discharge.

Ask whether water pressure or thermal expansion needs assessment. If high pressure is confirmed, a plumber can explain whether pressure-regulator service or another correction is appropriate. A regulator is not a substitute for diagnosing every leak.

Repair or replacement?

An external connection may have a different repair path from a leaking tank. The decision should include the exact failure, heater condition, parts availability, warranty coverage, and the installed cost of the proposed work.

Ask for the location of the leak to be shown or explained. If replacement is recommended, request the model and complete installation scope. If the leak can be repaired, ask what will be tested afterward and what follow-up is needed.

Details that help the first visit

Have the model and serial number, approximate installation date, and prior repair paperwork available. Tell the technician whether other fixtures have unusually strong pressure, whether hot-water supply has changed, and whether nearby plumbing was recently worked on. These details help narrow the investigation without making assumptions from the puddle alone.
